A quick peek at Mrs. Katz

Here I am with my husband and two sons.  Owen is in 10th grade and Benjamin is here at Paden in 5th grade.  Mr. Katz used to teach here at Paden and is now a school psychologist in West Contra Costa Unified.  This photo was taken in my parents' backyard in Berkeley to give to my Grammie who turned 100 in 2017!

Room 23 2018-19 3rd Grade Nonfiction Published Online!

Using Book Creator, we collaborated to present our research findings in a way to engage and teach readers.  Though there is still more editing and revising we could do, we want to show you what our group of 3rd grade writing partners has accomplished in about a month of Writers' Workshop.  We hope you enjoy our books!  Click on a picture below to read about that animal.

Current Assignments

Math Homework Page

Your child will bring a homework booklet back and forth each day.  Each lesson has an example page to use as a guide and a page for your child to complete.

Please coach your child to read all directions and prompts aloud. This assignment is primarily information for you about how your child is doing in class and secondarily some extra practice.  If your child is stumped, just have him or her make an attempt.

Please keep everything in the booklet and return the booklet each day for spot checks.

Math Facts Practice

Start memorizing your multiplication/division facts.  Just spend a few minutes each day.  We are aiming to master the 2's through the 5's by the end of first trimester.  We should master the 6's through the 10's by the end of second trimester.

You can write out group counting strips, make flashcards, or play free online games online.

Reading At Home

Third graders must read 30 minutes at home at least 5 days a week. 7 days is really ideal since then it's just as natural as eating a meal.  This is to be with texts at their "just right" reading level.  This means that they can decode 98% of the words with no adult help. On their own, they should have strategies for figuring out unfamiliar vocabulary such as chunking the word, rereading or scanning ahead for context clues and self-correcting.  They should be able to summarize what they've read and more importantly talk about character traits, plot events, main ideas and details with little prompting.
